I get the feeling that some of the negative reviews came from folks that were first-time grinders.

When you grind meat, *any* meat, it should be put in the freezer first and ground very cold (not frozen solid, but cold) in order to not end up with a creamy meat paste and for food safety reasons. Cubed beef, chicken and pork that had been sufficiently chilled and fed through ground with no problem at all (don''t forget to also chill the grinding plates!!)

The included sausage horns work nicely, I''m pretty happy with the purchase. Works well for those that like to break down their own meat, though I wouldn''t want to use it in a commercial setting, but that''s not what it''s sold for.

Anyway, I''m happy with it and you probably will be too. Just realize there''s a bit more skill to grinding and mincing meat than many folks might realize so do your homework if it''s your first time :)

For years I''ve been eyeing sausage equipment and wanted to get into sausage making. Although the reviews here seemed to be equally favourable and unfavourable, I decided to purchase the Weston #10 because it was so cheap and figured if I didn''t like it, I wouldn''t be out much. Also, I like the old school charm of a manual grinder.
I had my kids buy the Weston for Father''s Day and was almost ready to start making brats when I discovered that the unit had the wrong stuffing star - it was too big. I called Weston, filled out a form online and emailed my proof of purchase, and within a couple of days they sent a replacement sausage stuffing kit.
Take a look at the picture. Not only do my brats look legit, but they tasted legit! The Weston #10 did exactly what I wanted it to do: grind meat and stuff sausage. Very easy to do, just remember things like to use ice water and near-freeze not only the meat, but the Weston as well. Cold is not only safe, but it makes grinding easier! Also, it was very easy to do the entire operation by myself.
I have no idea why people give the Weston #10 such a bad rap. It''s not the greatest, but for $22.50 Prime, I have all the hardware I need to make brats. In the future, I''ll do 4 or 5 lb batches, which considering the clean up time, is probably just right for this machine.

For all the raw food feeders out there this old grinder is great. My mom had one for years still great. I was looking to grind up my dogs chicken with bone for my dogs. big grinders so expensive so I have seen people motorized these old grinders so I bought one to try to see if it would grind up chicken leg quarters for my dogs. Well it works great I cut up the quarter and place pieces in grinder then grind up there organ meat in to chicken mixture. It works great . I did not motorized as I like my fingers, plus helps build up your arm muscles . works great probably not made for grinding bone but grinds chicken bone great. As one of my dogs gobbles his food so grinding was best for him this way he gets bone but no problem with sharp pieces. If you are looking to buy for this reason get it. I bought this one that attaches to my table. easy to clean as I just unlock it and wash all parts . made of real steel and somethings are still made the right way.!!!!!!!! . So happy I bought it my dogs love the grinder meat with bone. Now I buy my chicken grind it then put in hamburger press. freeze there food into Pattys and is so much easier giving them a few Pattys with all there supplements added into the patty. love it!!!!!!

Excellent Value for the Price

If you''re considering purchasing this meat grinder you are probably going through a similar thought process as I did: Should I buy a cheap electric grinder and worry about it wearing out quickly, or do I purchase this old trusty hand grinder to get me through a fall or two of hunting and save up for a quality electric grinder? Well as you can tell by me writing a review of this grinder, I decided on the latter option.

When considering the purchase of this grinder you''ll need to be realistic as to what to expect. You''re not going to be able to easily grind through hundreds of pounds of meat quickly and without hard work. Hand grinding meat is not a fun thing. But if you are willing to put in the time to save a few bucks, I wouldn''t hesitate to recommend this product or any of the other sizes of Weston meat grinders to you. Just be realistic about the amount of meat you''re going to attempt to grind. If it''s under 15 lbs you can probably handle it in an afternoon.

As far as build quality goes on this grinder, there''s really nothing wrong with it. Everything worked very smoothly for me this fall and nothing at all broke. The parts are cast and seem very strong. The carbon steel blade stayed sharp through the entirety of my 30+ pounds of meat that it ground. It cuts through meat easily without too much pressure needed on the handle, but realize that you''ll need to turn the handle 1-2 gazillion times in order to get the job done.

Since I was grinding venison and it tends to be sinewy and tough, I didn''t use the smaller grinding plate on my grind at all. I just ran it through the larger plate twice. This doesn''t seem to be detrimental at all to the quality of the burger that I got out of it. However, if you''re grinding pork or beef, I could see running it through a smaller plate being beneficial for a fine grind.

The one problem that we ran into while grinding this fall is that the deer tallow ends up building up in the auger channel, filling up the slots cut in the sides which help the auger push the meat through to the cutter. This was a simple fix, as we just disassembled the grinder (this only takes a minute or less) and scraped out the fat in the channels. This was required 3 times during our 30 pounds of grind, so if you''re grinding less than 10 pounds I don''t think I''d worry about that as much. HOWEVER, it could get worse with a fattier meat like beef or pork. Your mileage may vary with that.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this grinder to anyone that''s budget conscious that is willing to put in a bit of work for their ground meat. This would also be a great choice for a chef needing to make a few sausages or a couple of pounds of ground meat of any kind. It will zip through that job with minimal effort.

I tried to ignore the numerous one-star reviews, assuming that perhaps the owners didn''t know how to maintain the blades properly or had expectations too high for a $20 meat grinder. I scoured the internet for every article I could find on manual grinder assembly and tuning, with the thought that I might sharpen the blades, tweak the fit, and make a useable tool out of what I could clearly see was a cheaply-made product. Alas, the problems with this grinder run so deep that no amount of fixing will redeem it.

The casting quality on this is atrocious; it more resembles something you''d find in the garden department than the kitchen aisle. The pin at the end of the augur on mine was slightly askew, which caused continuous scraping of the augur on the interior body when the front screw was tightened down. (Hilariously, the instruction manual suggests loosening the front ring if this happens. Never mind the gap that opens between the blade and the plate, allowing meat to smear without cutting.) The threads on the front were also so horribly machined that it took four or five tries to properly get the ring threaded each and every time I put it on. The thumb screw which attaches the handle had been tinned the length of its threads, so I had to forcefully screw and unscrew it, blowing tin shavings out of the bore, until it would thread on completely.

And this was just my assessment getting the thing together! Despite my mounting concern, I went ahead and attempted to grind 3 pounds of diced, partially frozen pork shoulder. A promising few threads of meat emerged from the end of the machine before merging together into a pink mush of smeared fat and meat. I soldiered on, cranking the nigh-impossible-to-turn handle, forcing cubes of meat down dangerously close to the augur with my fingers, stopping three times to disassemble the thing and clean off the knot of fat and meat around the ill-fitting blade, the resume my desperate task. I tried this with the ring tight, and with the ring loose; pushing the meat, and letting the augur work alone; fast turn, slow turn, onward! As result of my dedication, the interior quickly became a horror show of mashed up, recirculating meat. If you''ve seen those "pink slime" expose videos, you know what I speak.

I washed and dried the thing, a task made no easier by its sandpaper like interior, and carefully dried the blades. As of this next morning, rust has formed on the area where the augur meets the crank, and there is tinning missing along most of the edge of the augur. I assume it is somewhere in the mashed pork I froze last night, a feeble attempt at thrift. I''ve eaten many questionable things, but ground up Chinese "tin" is where I''ll have to draw the line.

The grinder is being returned; I''ll try one of the better reviewed stainless-steel models, or may just turn to a cast-iron relic from eBay. Don''t doubt the bad reviews--this grinder really deserves them all.

this cast item is not worth it. Spend the money on a quality grinder. The auger is irregularly shaped, the blades and screens do not fit right. The thing leaks and doesn''t decently grind meat. Lots of effort wasted to get even the simplest/smallest amount of meat ground. I tried to grind a pork butt. Chopped it in small pieces and spent a lot of time trying to get it ground. I took it apart and reassembled it several times. I''ve used meat grinders like this for years with no problems, but this thing is junk. They are not complicated machines, this one simply is not worth the price or time. I got it for our cottage and simple, small uses up there. Nope! It is worth it to spend the money on a quality one or go to a yard sale and get the one that used to belong to someones grandma.

The shipping was efficient and quick, it was well packaged.

Way better than the plate design of my grandma’s that tended to slip around. It was delivered and we already used it to make a traditional family favorite, bologna salad! I included a pic of the hard boiled eggs we sent through it on the fine plate with the blade. It worked as beautifully as my grandma’s workhorse she’s had since the 70s! You won’t be disappointed!

I just received the #10 model today. After opening the box and examining the product, it''s being returned untested. Even before ordering, I knew this products biggest positive trait would be it''s price.. what I had not counted on, was the incredible list of shortcomings that make this thing completely valueless in my mind. It''s so badly and carelessly manufactured, that it''s most high quality piece is the box it comes in.

To be fair, it''s cheap and it may actually serve it''s intended purpose (grinding meat). I don''t know. I refuse to try. But hence the two stars.

Pros
1. Price.
2. Nice size for a home kitchen. Not overkill, but not so tiny it will only grind nuts and crackers.
3. Did I mention the nice box it came in.
4. They throw in some niceties like the sausage stuffers
5. Affordable low cost
6. The dies actually seem chunky. Don''t know if they''re true with the knife. Didn''t try.
7. Nice heavy chunk of cast iron so it should have some salvage value.
8. Did I mention this thing is cheaper than a post convention Reno hooke...never mind. It''s inexpensive.

The Negatives

1. Careless, shoddy, indifferent manufacturing standards. The casting is rough. The seams are prominent and uneven. There has been no effort to polish the casting. They just tin what comes out of the mold. Much rougher than Lodge cast iron. Nothing but bad here.

2. Poor tolerances. The retaining ring seems to fit okay on this one, but the dye is very tight on the auger. Difficult to assemble. Almost impossible to disassemble. The other end of the auger is too large for the handle. If would not assemble with just a dry fit and pressure. It may fit with a lubricant, maybe. But then would it comes apart? I have nothing bad to say about the retaining screw and the thread in the auger. I didn''t try it. It did look a little rough and messy. The.screw on the bottom clamp turned well. The auger rubs on something when it''s turned. Lubrication would probably abate this, but again its another sign of sloppy cost effective indifference. Also, as rough is the inside of the housing is, getting it clean could be a nightmare

3. The tin coating is downright scary. It doesn''t help that it''s doing it''s best to cover up rough casting with unground seams, but it''s flaking off in my hands. Maybe it''s just the loose stuff from the manufacturing. Maybe it will continue to flake, expose the bare iron underneath, and it will start to rust faster than a 1977 VW Rabbit Diesel. ( go ahead, ask me how I know ). Or maybe it gets in the food, and theres lead or Mercury in it because China is not exactly a bastion of manufacturing safeguards, but I digress...

4,. The dyes may be nicely machined and chunky, but the knife looks like it was forged by a chimpanzee on its first day as a blacksmith.

5. The Soviet made grinder I inherited from Grandma is way nicer. It''s a #5 so it''s a little small for my needs and the knife is dull, but let me repeat, 1970s product manufactured in the USSR, used for 40 years, and abused for much of them inspires more confidence.

Other than that, it seems okay.

This product was not what I was expecting. Nothing in it is stainless steal which greatly concerns me when dealing with meats. Obviously when I took it out of the box to wash everything for the first time before use, the unit in many places began to oxidize rapidly (inherit nature of cast iron), especially the cutter and the extruder plates. Anyways just wanted to express my experiences on the product, hopefully the manufacturer reads this and improves on the coatings or switch the bare finish components to something more resistant and sanitary to oxidation.

I hand washed it with soap and water. The blades immediately started to rust and the extrusion plates looked like they sat in a vat of acid for a day. I scrubbed the rust off with a scouring pad, oiled all the pieces with vegetable oil and stashed it for when I had some meat to grind. Today I HAND TIGHTENED it to the counter and heard a loud pop sound. I assumed the sound was the counter breaking under the pressure. Nope, it was the C-clamp arm snapping off the bottom of the grinder. It''s entirely useless now. What a waste of time and money. Avoid this piece of junk, I don''t think a single piece of this thing is stainless steel, or even steel for that matter.
